The Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend or HJ in German) was the youth organization of the Nazi Party in Germany.
 * Origins and Purpose: Founded in 1926, it aimed to indoctrinate young people with Nazi ideology, training them for both war and a life dedicated to the Nazi cause. It emphasized physical fitness, absolute obedience to the Nazi Party, and a fervent belief in German racial superiority.
 * Membership and Organization:  Initially voluntary, membership in the Hitler Youth became mandatory for young people in Nazi Germany.  Boys aged 10-14 belonged to the Deutsches Jungvolk (German Young People), and those aged 14-18 were in the Hitlerjugend proper. The organization had a paramilitary structure, with uniforms, ranks, and drills mirroring those of the adult Nazi organizations.
 * Activities: Members participated in a wide range of activities, including sports, camping, hiking, and paramilitary training. They were also subjected to intense propaganda and indoctrination, learning to embrace Nazi ideology and anti-Semitism.
 * Role in the Nazi State: The Hitler Youth served several functions for the Nazi regime. It ensured the next generation would be loyal to the Nazi Party, provided a source of future soldiers and leaders, and helped spread Nazi ideology throughout German society. During the later years of World War II, Hitler Youth members were even called upon to fight in combat.
